How Much Does a Law Firm Website Cost? (And What You’re Actually Paying For)

The real answer is not a number - it is a breakdown of what separates a website that generates cases from one that just exists.

This is the most common question law firms ask when they start shopping for a new website, and it’s the question most agencies dodge with “it depends.” They’re not wrong that it depends, but they’re being unhelpful by refusing to explain what it depends on.

Law firm websites range from $3,000 to over $100,000. That spread is enormous, and it exists because the term “website” covers everything from a five-page template with stock photos to a fully custom, conversion-optimized digital platform integrated with your intake system, CRM, and marketing automation tools.

The number that matters is not how much you spend. It’s what you get for what you spend, and whether that investment generates a return in signed cases. Here’s how to think about law firm website costs in a way that actually helps you make a decision.

The Three Tiers of Law Firm Websites

Tier 1: Template Sites ($3,000 to $10,000)

At this level, you’re getting a pre-built WordPress or Squarespace template customized with your firm’s logo, colors, and content. A freelancer or small agency plugs your information into an existing design, adds your practice area pages, and launches it.

What you get:

  • A functional website that looks professional enough
  • Five to fifteen pages (home, about, practice areas, contact)
  • Basic mobile responsiveness
  • Stock photography or minimal custom imagery
  • A contact form

What you don’t get:

  • Custom design tailored to your market positioning
  • Conversion optimization
  • SEO strategy or keyword research baked into the site architecture
  • Ongoing support or optimization
  • Integration with intake systems or CRMs

This tier works for solo practitioners or small firms that need a basic online presence and plan to grow into something more robust later. It does not work for firms in competitive markets trying to generate cases through their website.

Tier 2: Custom Sites ($15,000 to $40,000)

This is where most serious law firm websites live. At this price point, you’re getting a custom-designed website built specifically for your firm, with a strategic approach to user experience, search engine optimization, and conversion.

What you get:

  • Custom design that reflects your brand and differentiates you from competitors
  • Twenty to fifty pages including detailed practice area content, attorney bios, case results, and blog posts
  • SEO-informed site architecture with keyword research driving the page structure
  • Conversion-optimized layouts with strategic calls to action, trust signals, and multiple contact methods
  • Professional photography or high-quality custom imagery
  • Mobile-first responsive design
  • Schema markup for attorneys, reviews, and local business information
  • Integration with call tracking and basic analytics

This tier is appropriate for firms that are investing in digital marketing and expect their website to actively generate cases. The design and content are intentional, every element serves a purpose, and the site is built to support ongoing SEO and paid advertising efforts.

Tier 3: Enterprise-Level Sites ($50,000 to $100,000+)

Enterprise-level law firm websites are built for multi-location firms, high-volume practice areas, or firms competing in the most aggressive markets in the country. These projects involve extensive strategy, custom functionality, and deep integration with the firm’s operational systems.

What you get:

  • Everything in Tier 2, plus:
  • Extensive content development (100+ pages of SEO-optimized content)
  • Custom interactive features (case value calculators, intake questionnaires, live chat integration)
  • Multi-location optimization with dedicated pages for each office and service area
  • CRM and intake system integration (Salesforce, Clio, Lead Docket, etc.)
  • Marketing automation setup
  • Advanced analytics and conversion tracking
  • Ongoing A/B testing and conversion rate optimization
  • ADA accessibility compliance
  • Custom video production and integration

This tier makes sense for firms with significant marketing budgets that treat their website as a core business asset rather than a digital business card.

Where the Money Actually Goes

When you pay for a law firm website, you’re paying for several distinct categories of work. Understanding where the money goes helps you evaluate proposals and avoid overpaying for some things while underpaying for others.

Strategy and Planning (10-15% of budget)

Before anyone opens a design tool, there should be a strategy phase. This includes competitive analysis, keyword research, information architecture planning, and conversion strategy. Firms that skip this step end up with a pretty website that doesn’t rank and doesn’t convert.

If a web design agency doesn’t include a strategy phase in their proposal, that’s a red flag. It means they’re designing based on aesthetics alone, not business outcomes.

Design (20-30% of budget)

This is the visual layer: layout, typography, color, imagery, and user interface design. Good law firm design is not about winning awards. It’s about creating a visual experience that communicates credibility, guides the visitor toward conversion, and works flawlessly on every device.

Design costs vary based on the number of unique page templates, the level of custom illustration or photography, and the number of revision rounds included in the project.

Development (25-35% of budget)

Development is the technical implementation: turning designs into a functioning website. This includes front-end coding, CMS configuration, form setup, third-party integrations, performance optimization, and quality assurance testing.

WordPress remains the dominant CMS for law firm websites because of its flexibility, SEO capabilities, and the ecosystem of plugins and developers available. Custom WordPress development costs more than using a page builder like Elementor or Divi, but it produces faster, more secure, and more maintainable websites.

Content (15-25% of budget)

Content is where most law firm website projects go wrong. Either the firm is expected to write all the content themselves (which never gets done on time), or the agency farms it out to cheap freelance writers who produce generic, low-value pages.

Good law firm website content requires a writer who understands legal marketing, SEO, and conversion copywriting. Expect to pay $200 to $500 per page for quality practice area content, and $300 to $800 for in-depth blog posts or resource guides.

Content is not a place to cut costs. The best design in the world won’t convert if the words on the page are generic, uninspiring, or fail to address the prospect’s concerns.

SEO Foundation (10-15% of budget)

A well-built website includes foundational SEO work: keyword-optimized title tags and meta descriptions, proper heading structure, schema markup, XML sitemap configuration, Google Search Console setup, page speed optimization, and internal linking strategy.

This is different from ongoing SEO services, which are typically a separate monthly retainer. But the foundation needs to be right at launch, or you’re starting from behind.

Ongoing Costs After Launch

The website launch is not the finish line. Budget for ongoing costs including:

  • Hosting: $30 to $200 per month for quality managed WordPress hosting. Don’t cheap out here. Slow, unreliable hosting undermines everything else.
  • Maintenance: $100 to $500 per month for security updates, plugin updates, backups, and minor content changes.
  • SEO: $2,000 to $10,000+ per month depending on market competitiveness and scope of work.
  • Content: $1,000 to $5,000 per month for ongoing blog posts, new practice area pages, and content updates.
  • Conversion optimization: $500 to $2,000 per month for A/B testing, analytics review, and performance improvements.

Red Flags When Shopping for a Web Designer

Watch for these warning signs during the sales process:

  • “We’ll have it done in two weeks.” A quality custom website takes 8 to 16 weeks minimum. Anyone promising faster is cutting corners.
  • No portfolio of law firm work. Legal marketing has specific requirements around ethics, disclaimers, and conversion patterns. A generalist agency will miss things a legal-specific agency won’t.
  • They don’t ask about your business goals. If the agency jumps straight to design concepts without asking about your practice areas, target clients, competitive landscape, and growth objectives, they’re not building a strategic asset. They’re building a brochure.
  • You don’t own your site. Some agencies use proprietary platforms and hold your website hostage. Make sure you own your domain, your content, and your site files. If you leave, everything comes with you.
  • No discussion of analytics or tracking. If the agency doesn’t set up conversion tracking, call tracking, and analytics as part of the project, you’ll have no way to measure whether the website is actually working.

Making the Decision

The right budget for your law firm website depends on your market, your growth goals, and how central digital marketing is to your client acquisition strategy. A solo family law attorney in a small market has different needs than a multi-office personal injury firm in a top-10 metro area.

But regardless of budget, the principle is the same: your website is an investment, not an expense. Evaluate it based on its ability to generate revenue, not just its visual appeal. A $30,000 website that signs three additional cases per month is infinitely more valuable than a $5,000 website that looks nice but generates nothing.
